Politically Correct Nutrition and Epidemic of Obesity

fat american “There is not the horse that draws the cart, but the oats”
- Russian proverb

There are currently about 2200 published books in America about food, diets, and nutrition. Even more so - thousands of magazine, newspaper and Internet articles are annually devoted to those topics. The majority of posts, however, promote and explain the postulates of so-called Politically Correct Nutrition which corresponds to the point of view of the American medical and agricultural establishment and protects the interests of the food processing industry and giant corporations manufacturing liquid vegetable oils, margarines, boxed cereals, etc. The main ideas of Politically Correct Nutrition are stated in the “Food Guide Pyramid” and a document “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” that was published in 1985 under the US Department of Agriculture and which is still considered a Bible of those of us who want to lose weight and stay healthy. Propaganda works fairly well - the Americans have cut down on meats, eggs, butter, whole milk and other traditional foods that we really need for robust health and optimal weight, but eat instead boxed and pre-packaged concoctions partially produced in the laboratories, margarines, soy, skim milk, and, of course, enormous amount of “healthy” carbohydrates: the dietary regime that finally has led us to the epidemic of obesity and weight-related diseases, the rate and scale of which cannot even be compared to anything else people ever experienced in their history.

The first Surgeon General’s Report on Nutrition and Health contained the following conclusion: “…overconsumption of certain dietary components is now a major concern for Americans. While many food factors are involved, chief among them is disproportionate consumption of foods high in fat, often at the expense of foods high in complex carbohydrates and fiber that may be more conductive to health.”

Therefore, in accordance with the Politically Correct Nutrition and in order to maintain desirable weight and stay healthy, we mainly have to adjust out diet in two basic ways:

donut - To avoid saturated fat and cholesterol (contained in traditional products, such as bacon, eggs, butter, whole milk, organ meats, coconut cream, etc.). What is the alternative? Margarines and liquid, processed, cheep vegetable oils, all of which, in accordance with recent research, are the main culprit of atherosclerosis and a huge epidemic of cardiovascular disease.

and

- To eat carbohydrate-rich foods with plenty of starch and fiber (such as breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, potatoes, and an endless list of “healthy” processed snacks, many of which are the main suspects in the epidemic rates of obesity and diabetes among American population).

Have you even tried to lose weight eating plenty of carbohydrates, cutting down on essential fats, and counting calories as is recommended in such guidelines? If yes, then you, probably, know very well the results of such “dieting” - “yo-yo” effect, when after losing a couple of pounds during the first week of the diet (mainly in the form of water) you gain back much more; constant feeling of hunger; fast aging of skin; irritability, depression and other physiological disturbances… In the long run, as this diet is grossly inadequate in nutritional components and too rich is carbs, you may end up with a whole bunch of extra pounds and an array of degenerative diseases. Which, in fact, is clearly exhibited in the data on the average weight and health profile of the American population…

fatburger Adequate weight and good health vastly depends of what and how much you eat. “Generally accepted” very often does not mean “right”, especially if it contradicts to the common sense, physiological facts, and the vast experience of many healthy generations of our ancestors.
