Lipitor

lipitor Lipitor, or atorvastatin, is a prescription medication that is widely used in modern medicine to lower patients’ blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and other fatty components.

Lipitor belongs to the class of so-called “statin drugs”, or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (other statin drugs are Mevacor, Pravachol, Zocor, Crestor, and Lescol), which are designed to work together with eating low-fat diet, maintaining healthy weight, and exercising, to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Lipitor is the only completely synthetic type of statins. When taken on a regular basis, it slows the production of cholesterol in the liver and reduces the amount of fatty substances in the blood, thus preventing them from clogging the arteries and potentially leading to artery blockages. In addition, Lipitor increases the blood amount of “good”, or HDL, cholesterol.

Build-up of fatty components, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, along the walls of arteries is called atherosclerosis. This condition is developed slowly and is usually related to an advanced age. Atherosclerosis leads to a decrease in both blood flow and oxygen supply to such important organs, as the brain and heart. Therefore, lowering cholesterol level in the body can help to prevent the development of the widely spread “diseases of civilization” (heart attacks and strokes), which are presently considered the most debilitating and mortal health conditions of the industrialized world.

In addition to normalizing the level of blood fats, Lipitor can reduce blood vessels’ inflammation, thus lowering the likelihood of plaque clotting in coronary arteries. This effect of Lipitor is especially important for patients with type 2 diabetes, who are very prone to developing of vascular disease. In numerous studies, Lipitor showed up to 25% effectiveness in reducing the dangerous health consequences of atherosclerosis.

A spokesman for the drug-manufacturing company “Pfizer”, Bryant Haskins, says that  Lipitor is the safest and the most studied drug in the world. It has participated in more than 400 trials and clinical research involving 80,000 patients. About 20 million people all over the glob have been taking Lipitor for more than a decade with little side effects. However, in some patients statin drugs can provoke side effects, the two major kind of which are liver damage and muscle failure. Although side effects are infrequent, drug manufacturers and doctors warn patients to be careful while taking Lipitor or other cholesterol-lowering drugs. Muscle pains or aches should be a warning signal, and, if they develop, your health-care provider will adjust the dosage. Also, for the sake of safety, liver function in patients who take Lipitor should be tested and monitored at least once in six months.

Despite its reported side effects, Lipitor’s annual sales account for about $12 billion. It is currently the world’s best-selling drug and the most popular statin medication.
