Cabbage Soup Diet

Following the cabbage soup diet a person does not starve, but can fill up as much as he or she wants on vegetables, fruit and juices. There is also the cabbage soup which a person should eat every day of the diet. After following a 7-day plan the participant will notice significant weight changes. The adherents of the diet say it is possible to lose up to 10 lbs in one week if the diet is kept without cheating.

The cabbage soup diet is not suitable for long-term weight loss, because it is low in protein which is a main building source for body cells. At the same time, the diet is low in fat and high in fiber, so it “cleans guts” and prepares the digestive system to work better with any long-term eating plan. It is perfect in case the person want to lose a lot of weight quickly by some special event.

The diet should be started with the preparation of the cabbage soup. The recipes might vary a little, so the person can browse the Internet or diet books to find the one that would sound the tastiest. Here is a recipe from www.cabbage-soup-diet.com:

•    6 large green onions
•    2 green peppers
•    1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
•    3 Carrots
•    1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
•    1 bunch of celery
•    half a head of cabbage
•    1 package Lipton soup mix
•    1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
•    1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
•    Water
•    Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.

Start with green onions; slice them and sauté with cooking spray. Cut peppers to bite-size pieces and add them to the pot (do not forget to take out the seeds and throw them away). Cut the cabbage, carrots, and mushrooms and add them to the pot. Add any spices you desire, but be low on salt: if the bouillon is added, do not put any salt, because the cube has enough of it. Use either 12 cups of water or 8 cups plus the V8 juice. Cover and cook on low heat for a while until the vegetables are tender (usually it takes around one hour). If cabbage is added in the end of the preparation (about 10 minutes before the heat is turned off), it preserves more of the nutrients and does not give bad smell to the kitchen.

The person that wants to try this diet should do his or her best on the preparation of the soup because it will be the main meal during the 7-day diet and it is allowed to eat as much of the soup as desired at any time of day or night.

Here is how the person should plan the cabbage-soup-diet week:

Day First is a fruit day. This is the time when you can eat as many fruits as you want. It can be any kind of fruit except bananas. As it has been mentioned above, the soup is welcome at any time of the day. The diet requires high liquid intake, so go for water, cranberry juice, or unsweetened tea.

Day Second is a vegetable day. Any kind of vegetable is welcome, although it is advised to stay away from dry beans, peas and corn and make emphasis on dark leafy vegetables. Think of different ways to prepare the vegetables in order to make the meals more interesting: eat them raw, boiled or baked. And do not forget about the soup that goes along with the vegetables.

Day Third combines the fruit and vegetables. Anything from these groups is allowed except bananas and baked potato.

Day Fourth is very limited comparing to the previous ones. It allowed bananas and skim milk only. About eight bananas and endless cups of skim milk should go well with the cabbage soup on this day.

Day Fifth gives you some meat finally. Up to six tomatoes should go with 10-12 ounces of beef. If you desire, it can be broiled or baked chicken with no skin instead of beef. Do not forget about the soup and drink plenty of liquids this day.

Day Sixth broadens the variety of vegetables and gives more freedom of meat. Any amount of beef is all right. It can also be lean chicken or fish. Eat any vegetables except baked potato. The cabbage soup should be taken at least once on this day.

Day Seventh is made of brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juices. Any amounts of food are fine as long as they are accompanied with the soup.

Enjoy the diet and quick weight loss, but beware that the cabbage soup diet is gas powered!
