Grapefruit Diet

Grapefruit or Fruit Juice Diet is different from many diet plans known to people. As a rule the participants are offered to starve or to reduce the amount of carbohydrates and calories they take, but it is not so in this case. Another special part about the Grapefruit diet is that a person should have the same set of meals every day, while in others every day is scheduled differently.
This diet is often referred to as “Mayo Clinic Diet”, but the Mayo Clinic health center based in Rochester, NY, denies the Grapefruit diet. It is clearly stated that the center has not approved any diet plan until December 2005, but the Grapefruit diet has been popular even before that time. The official letter from the health center also says, “Versions of a Mayo Clinic Diet have been circulating for decades. Most push grapefruit, eggs, cabbage soup or meat and promise dramatic weight loss. None of these diets is associated with or has been endorsed by Mayo Clinic.”
Nonetheless, the Grapefruit diet exists and has its followers no matter if Mayo Clinic center accepts it or not. It is simply built, so anybody can follow the diet. First of all, it has a minimum diet plan. These are the products that have to be taken every day regardless whether one likes them or not. So, the mandated meals are:
Breakfast:
• Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
• 2 eggs any style
• 2 slices of bacon
Lunch:
• Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
• Salad with any dressing
• Meat any style and any amount.
Dinner:
• Either 1/2 grapefruit OR 8 oz. juice (unsweetened)
• Salad with any dressing OR a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices.
• Meat or even fish any style cooked any way.
• Coffee or tea (1 cup)
Bedtime Snack:
• 8oz. glass of tomato juice or 8 oz cup of skim milk.
Along with the above mentioned products a dieting person may eat red and green onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, any other green vegetables, chili without beans, mayonnaise, cheese, hot dogs, Cole slaw, regular salad dressing, and dill or bread/butter pickles.
Although this diet allows eating as much as a person desires and almost any products, there is a group of things that should be avoided. They are white onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, corn and other starchy vegetables, potato and corn chips, peanut butter, pasta, jelly or jam, sweet pickles, pretzels, fruit, low-fat or diet salad dressings.
So, these are the products. The next thing that has to be figured out is a set of rules to follow. Here they are:
1. Stay on the diet for 12 days; make a 2-day break and repeat if necessary.
2. At any meal eat till you feel full and cannot eat any more.
3. Drink 64 oz. of water every day.
4. Nothing can be eliminated from the mandated diet plan.
5. The amount of grapefruit or fruit juice cannot be changed: added or reduced. The diet plan provides the exact amount needed for weight loss.
6. If you are a coffee drinker, limit the intake of it to 1 cup at mealtime.
7. Do not eat between meals. It is recommended to eat as much as possible during the meals, so that there would be no need in snacking between them.
8. The diet completely eliminated sugar and starches, so avoid desserts, bread, white vegetables and any sweet products.
If the diet plan is followed precisely and the rules are kept, the founders of the grapefruit diet guarantee an impressive weight loss: up to 52 pounds in 2.5 months!
